While there aren’t a lot of things that unite French crowds at Roland Garros, young tennis sensation Taylor Fritz sure figured out a way to do so. It may have involved a lot of courage and it may not be the way you’re thinking, but it did happen. After Fritz’s victory against a crowd favorite, he put his finger on his lips and ‘shushed’ the crowd who were openly disrespecting his win. Recently, he opened up about his and the crowd’s reaction.
During Fritz’s match against Rinderknech, tensions rose as both players fought hard for victory. However, when Fritz emerged as the winner, instead of applause or respect, the French crowd booed and whistled loudly, expressing their displeasure towards the American player.

Despite the hostile reception, Taylor Fritz remained calm during the match and didn’t do anything to worsen the situation. Explaining his actions later, Fritz mentioned that the crowd’s reaction went beyond fair competition, with people celebrating every time he made a mistake.
“I basically just said ‘Yeah, whatever, there’s a lot of people booing me,’ but then there’s all the kids and stuff with the balls [waiting for autographs]. They literally threw a party every time I missed a 1st serve. I was respectful because I didn’t want to make it worse the whole time. But when it was over I said ‘Whatever, if I’m going to take this s**t for 3 hours, I’m allowed to do this,” Fritz shared in an exclusive interview with iNews UK.
