The 2020 ATP season will wrap up this month. There is plenty to look forward to next season, but not a lot of tournaments are confirmed. In fact, the ATP Cup will serve as the season opener, but the format remains uncertain. There are already contestants pulling out due to the unpredictable flow of events. 

Retired tennis great Tim Henman captained Great Britain during the inaugural ATP Cup event where they reached the quarterfinals. The former Wimbledon semi-finalist guided his national side that comprised Dan Evans, Cameron Norrie, and doubles partners Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury.

The inaugural edition kicked off the calendar and invited 24 nations who formed teams to battle it out in Australia. It proved to be an exciting event and the perfect way to being the season. 

However, things haven’t been the same since the inaugural edition concluded. A global pandemic caused complete havoc and sent everyone into a state of disbelief. Even though tennis activities have now resumed, there are protocols to be followed. 

Tim Henman is skeptical about ATP Cup 2021 

A lot of factors are pushing back Tim Henman from taking part in ATP Cup 2021. It will undoubtedly be an exciting event for the players, but the tournament protocols are yet to be confirmed. 

Tim Henman has a straightforward reason as to why he wouldn’t captain Great Britain in the upcoming edition: “The quarantine issues would be me being away from home for too long a period & that doesn’t appeal anymore.”

Furthermore, Henman stated how his decision might be reversed if the COVID situation turns normal possibly in 2021. If not, the Brit would always be happy to return to duties when things settle down.

“Certainly if things do get back to normal the following year, if asked, I would definitely consider being involved again because it was a great event. I really enjoyed being on court with the players. It was something I’ve not done before but, yeah, it was a lot of fun,” mentioned Henman. 

Though the ATP Cup 2021 might take place, the same format is less likely to be followed. We received a hint from Dan Evans as he said the players are yet to receive any sort of update from the organization. 

However, he did mention that there might be restrictions in place with respect to the number of teams. We’d just have to stay tuned for more updates.
