French tennis star Gael Monfils is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining players on the tour to watch. However, he has been struggling with his foot injury for the last few months. Since the Miami Open, he has played only one tournament (Madrid Open). We even saw him preparing for the Wimbledon in the last few days, as he updated us about his injury.

Unfortunately, ahead of the main draw now, Gael announced rather disappointing news for his fans.

Gael Monfils withdraws from Wimbledon Championships

Earlier, Monfils took to Twitter to post a lengthy update about his recovery process and also announced the news of his withdrawal from the Grand Slam tournament.

“Hello, I wanted to give you a quick update following my foot injury. I have started to train again this week and I have felt really good. I will now be able to increase gradually my training and spend more time on the court to get back in shape both from a physical and tennis point of view,” Gael wrote on Twitter.

“Due to my recent return to training and because of the physical demands of grass court tennis / best of 5 matches, My team and I have taken the decision not to play Wimbledon this year. I will focus instead on my preparation to be ready for the summer. I will return to competition in Hamburg followed by Kizbuhel before travelling to the US. See you all soon, Ga?l… #TrustTheProcess,” he further stated.?

Notably, Monfils was the 19th seed at this year’s Wimbledon.

Monfils’ quest for a single Grand Slam title continues?

Known as one of the entertainers of the game, Monfils has always been an attractive player to watch. He has shown his athletic prowess time and again on the tennis court. However, he has never performed to his full potential at a Grand Slam tournament. Since making his debut in 2004, he reached only two semi-finals at a Major tournament: 2008 Roland Garros and 2016 US Open.

This year, he started the Australian Open in great fashion, as he reached the quarter-final. Unfortunately, he lost to the Italian player Matteo Berrettini in the quarters. After losing that match, he expressed his desire to win at least one Grand Slam title before he retires. Now, it seems like he has to wait a few more months to fulfill his dream at the US Open.
