Milos Raonic hails his idol, Pete Sampras for a particular feat
In the latest episode of the Match Point Canada podcast show, the Canadian tennis player was asked who he looked up to when he was younger. Milos Raonic answered, “Ah, Pete Sampras, huge Pete Sampras fan, was one of the… well, was maybe the person alongside my coach Casey Curtis that made me realize the importance of a serve and how it can really take you far in tennis.”
While lauding Sampras for making him realize the importance of a serve, the 32-year-old also asserted that the American tennis legend’s game is ‘massively underappreciated.’ He said, “And the amount of time I put into it and then also just the way he cared himself. And I think, you know, these new guys have set a new standard but I think his tennis is massively underappreciated, which is kind of crazy to say about a guy who has won 14 Grand Slams.”

In the process, Raonic also revealed a remarkable achievement pulled off by Sampras that the younger generation may never be able to match. He stated, “And one record that I think he will able to keep despite what these guys are doing nowadays. Six years in a row, finishing the year as the number one. Yes, consecutively, that’s a big…and especially back in those days, like there were many times when he was losing the spot right, whether is other players, I remember number one. But crunch time towards the end of the season, you know, six years in a row to finish number one is pretty crazy.”
