Serbian tennis superstar Djokovic secured his first Olympic Gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games. The 37-year-old took down Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets and marked a career highlight that he describes as the biggest one in his professional career. He spoke to Radio-Television Serbia from the balcony of the Old Palace in Belgrade, expressing his pride in bringing home the gold for Serbia.
“Without false modesty, this is the biggest sporting success I’ve ever had in my career, and I’m proud to wear this gold for Serbia,” Djokovic declared. This victory came after a bronze medal in Beijing in 2008, and several failed Olympic attempts in London, Rio, and Tokyo where he did not advance past the semi-finals. Djokovic said that winning the gold in Paris was a long-awaited dream come true.

Djokovic felt this might be his last chance to claim the Olympic Gold. “I’m 37 years old, I entered this Olympics without a trophy this season. I had an injury, and many questioned the quality of my tennis in the last few months. Few people saw me as a favorite, but secretly I believed because I knew this might be the last chance for me to win the gold,” he said, reflecting on his journey.

Despite struggling with a knee injury throughout the year, Djokovic managed to turn the tables. He faced a tough challenge against Alcaraz, with the first set going to a tiebreak. Djokovic saved six break points in one game to lead 5-4 and ultimately dominated the tiebreak, winning 7-3.

This win gave Djokovic the Olympic Gold and also completed his career Golden Slam. After achieving this enormous feat, Djokovic shared a message to inspire his fans. “This is my fifth Games. I’ve never played a final until now, and I want you to believe that nothing is impossible. Be the best version of yourself every day, not only in competitions,” he shared.
The fact that Djokovic said that this could probably be his last chance adds a contradiction to his hopes of having an even longer career.

Novak Djokovic aims to be a part of the LA28 games
The 2024 Paris Olympics are about to come to an end after weeks of high-class action and entertainment. While it is time that Venus Williams guides the massive audience through the handover ceremony for the LA28, fans already received a highlight for it a few days ago. Everyone thought that this would be the last time Djokovic appeared at the Olympic games. Dropping a major surprise, the Serb presented varying thoughts.
“It’s true, I would love to play in Los Angeles in 2028. I want to play in Los Angeles, I enjoy playing for my country in the Olympic Games, in the Davis Cup,“ the Serb said, defying the odds of age as a barrier for professional athletes.

Should he compete in the next Olympics, he will be 41 years old, the same age as Roger Federer when he retired. With him gone and Rafael Nadal on the verge of an exit, there’s a high possibility that the Serb solidifies his portfolio as the “Greatest of All Time“.
