The prodigy revealed that one regret that he harbors in his heart when it comes to Roger Federer.

The Swiss Maestro lives large in the hearts of many youngsters who are out to carve a path for themselves in the sport. Jannik Sinner is one of them and perhaps, one of the most prominent players currently, who idolizes Federer. Despite his admiration of the 20-time Grand Slam champion, Sinner has that one elusive wish regarding the retired icon.

Interviewing with Libero Quotidiano, a daily Italian newspaper, he was asked who his idol was in tennis. He replied, “It has always been Roger Federer. I dreamed of playing with him but unfortunately it never happened. Who knows if one day we will be able to do a performance together. I’d really like to. He is a very good person as well as being a great champion.”

The Italian youngster turned professional in 2018 and, just after a year, stated that he would love to face Federer. Unfortunately, he was never able to get that chance to play against the Swiss maestro, who retired in 2022. While that has got to be heartbreaking, it’s not all sad news for Sinner as he did get a chance to share the court with his idol!

When Sinner came close to fulfilling his dream

A 17-year-old Jannik Sinner was looking to make it big and be noticed by his idol when he turned pro. He did not have to wait for long. Appearing in his first Masters tournament in the 2019 Italian Open, Sinner won his opening round bout, and when he turned up at the practice court the next day, he found himself starstruck. He had the opportunity to train with Federer and did not let the chance slip.

While, Sinner’s dream of playing against Federer professionally did not come to fruition, he can have some fond memories of the two hitting balls on the practice court. He still idolizes Federer and, going forward, will try to live up to the legend of his role model.
