Unlike Compatriot Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka Nearly Confirms an Elongated Career as His Coach Brushes Off Retirement Talks

39-year-old Swiss player Stan Wawrinka didn’t have a great start to his 2024 season as he’s still searching for the 17th title in his singles career. Alex de Mianur recently defeated the three-time Grand Slam champion in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters. While Wawrinka had shown promise by defeating Roger Federer to win the title in Monte Carlo in 2014, his poor performances over the past few years have made fans wonder if he’s in the twilight of his career.

Well, to clarify all the doubts surrounding his future plans, Wawrinka’s current coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh recently made a surprising revelation. Something that every Wawrinka fan would love to hear!

Stan Wawrinka’s coach reveals that the Swiss tennis star sarcastically told him that he still wants to play at least 10 more years

Recently, the coach gave an interview to German daily, Blick. During the interview, the German-Iranian coach revealed that Stan Wawrinka has no trace of any thoughts of resignation.

He told me (sarcastically) in Marrakech that he wanted to be another 10 years. More seriously, he did not define it for himself. He just wants to play, work day after day and continue to progress. The subject of retirement is not on the table,” Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh. The coach said it is in fact an honor for him to train a champion like Stan Wawrinka.

But where does Stan Wawrinka get all this inspiration from? Well, just like many other tennis players, Roger Federer has reportedly been a huge part of who he is today. In a wholesome instance, the Swiss player had once said that he owes Federer a lot for inspiring him to achieve incredible things in his career.

“He wanted the best for me” – Wawrinka on Roger Federer

In Stan Wawrinka’s own words, “I owe him[Roger Federer] a lot in my career. There were positive things. I grew and improved thanks to him. He helped me a lot. Thanks to him, I won the Olympic Games and the Davis Cup. Those are two of the biggest titles of my career.” He sees Federer as a good friend and for him, Roger Federer is the best player that has ever played the game of tennis. Even the 42-year-old tennis legend has often showcased his support to his compatriot on multiple occasions in the past.

Stan Wawrinka once recalled how Fededer joined his family to congratulate him on winning his first major title at the 2014 AO. He revealed, “I didn’t call so many person, but my wife, my daughter, my sister and Roger called me. So, yeah, was nice for me. I know that he’s really, really happy for me. He always wanted the best for me.” Both of them have done exceptionally well to put Switzerland on the map of the tennis world. And hopefully Wawrinka will be able to bounce back just in time to further that prospect even more. What do you think?
