We will get to see the recently retired former US Open champion, Juan Martin del Potro, in Flushing Meadows for one last time. It is a fitting tribute as he secured the biggest titles of his career in New York. It was the year 2009. The Argentine was having one of the most successful seasons of his tennis career. However, his biggest moment came during the US Open that year. Seeded sixth in the tournament, del Potro went on to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title. He defeated Roger Federer in a thrilling five-set final match to win the biggest title of his career.

Over the past few years, del Potro’s career has been seriously affected by injuries. Despite boasting immense potential, he hasn’t been able to perform consistently on the ATP Tour during these times. Recently, he received an invitation from the US Open.

 

Juan Martin del Potro to potentially play a farewell match at next year’s US Open

The towering Argentine revealed that he held a discussion with the US Open officials where they told him that they would welcome him back for a farewell entry next year if he decided to play again. However, he still has protected ranking valid which will enable him to play the tournament if he wishes to return.

Earlier this year, del Potro had made a brief return to the ATP Tour. He played at the Argentina Open in front of his home crowd. However, he went down against his compatriot, Federico Delbonis, in the opening round of the tournament.

He had maintained that he will bid adieu to tennis after his Argentina Open appearance and also had an emotional farewell after bowing out of the tournament. However, there remains a possibility that he might play for one last time at the US Open next year, the only Grand Slam title in his kitty.

Frances Tiafoe heaps praise on del Potro

The American star, who idolized del Potro while growing up, was all praise for him. He said, “I’ve been a huge fan of his, when he played his last match, when he retired, that was tough for me.”
