A coin toss to decide how the match proceeds is a tradition in almost all sports worldwide. Tennis is no different. Before the match, the two players are involved in a coin toss to decide who will serve. Additionally, they can also decide which side they want to play on first. However, in the second-round match between Andrey Rublev and Stan Wawrinka in the Madrid Open, there were some issues with the coin toss. This led to Rublev coming up with an ingenious solution as to who will serve first. And it was a game of ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’, one of the most common and simple games that is often used to decide a winner in a tussle involving more than two parties.

Age-old game instead of a coin toss in a tennis match!

The Madrid Open had Andrey Rublev facing Stan Wawrinka in round 2. The coin toss before the match saw some confusion as the players weren’t familiar with the new virtual coin toss system. Instead of flipping a coin, the chair umpire starts a virtual coin toss system that simulates the process on the big screen. However, this led to some confusion and Rublev gave an ingenious solution to the problem. He suggested that the two engage in a game of ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ in order to settle the coin toss.

Wawrinka won the makeshift “toss” and decided that he would receive. A post of the scenario was shared on Twitter by a user. “Confusion over the coin toss leads to Rublev suggesting they settle it with rock-paper-scissors“, went the caption.

Another user on Twitter uploaded a video of the rock-paper-scissors on their account. They added the caption, “the coin toss that turned into rock paper and scizzors“.

When a weird coincidence involving Federer confused Murray in his match against Wawrinka

It seems like the ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ moment isn’t the only weird incident fans have seen in a match involving Wawrinka. In 2020, Andy Murray recalled a weird moment that took place with Roger Federer during the 2012 London Olympics.

During a post-match press conference, Murray recalled an incident at the 2012 Olympics. He remembered playing against Stan Wawrinka, a normal occurrence. However, he saw none other than Federer sitting in the player’s box. It was weird for him since only members of the team and family were allowed to sit in the box.

The Olympics were more memorable for him as he won the gold medal. However, it won’t be a surprise if he remembers the tournament for watching Federer in his opponent’s player box than winning the medal.
