Former world no.3, Juan Martin del Potro recently said goodbye to tennis in a very emotional way. Last Tuesday, the Tower of Tandil probably played his final match in front of a very vocal crowd. After almost a year of absence, the Argentine player played his first match at the Argentina Open against Federico Delbonis.

Due to various injuries, del Potro missed many tournaments in the past. Argentina Open was supposed to be his big comeback tournament. Unfortunately, that was probably his last ever match we witnessed. Del Potro played his comeback match in front of his mother and many other ex-players and coaches. Interestingly, former Argentine Davis Cup captain and the current Argentina Open director, Martin Jaite, was also there.

Juan Martin del Potro and Martin Jaite’s relationship was really interesting since they haven’t always been on the same page in the past. Del Potro quit the Davis Cup team in 2013, while Jaite was the caption. The big Argentine and Jaite had a massive conflict over the leadership, as their relationship got bitter.

However, after his last match, del Potro and Jaite put their differences aside, as they hugged each other. In the player’s area, they publicly gave each other a big compassionate hug.

Before Tuesday’s match, del Potro only played the Argentina Open once before in 2006. Speaking about not playing at the Argentina Open, del Potro said, “If I don’t regret having played the tournament in Buenos Aires more times? No, because I put together my calendars thinking about Indian Wells and Miami, on the fast court, in the first three or four months of the year so that I would be fine for the rest of the year.”

After losing to Federico Delbonis (1-6,3-6) in the first round at the Argentina Open, del Potro decided to end his career. Earlier, he had a plan to play the Rio Open after Argentina Open. However, that will never happen, as Argentina Open was his last ever tournament.

But, it all can change if del Potro can recover well from his injuries, same as Andy Murray. Notably, Murray announced his retirement at the Australian Open 2019, but made a miraculous comeback on the tour after recovering from his injuries.
