VIDEO: Tennis Fans Call for Suspension of Alexander Zverev As He Attempts to Hurt the Chair Umpire at ATP Acapulco

On Tuesday night at the Mexican Open, Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo played in a doubles match together against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. Unfortunately, the Brazilian and German pair lost to the lucky losers in three competitive sets. 

However, one interesting thing happened during the match which rocked the tennis community. During the match, Zverev lost his cool and started hitting the chair umpire’s stand where he was sitting. Although the German player didn’t hit the chair umpire, his aggressiveness was clearly visible. After this incident, many fans are reacting on social media and some of them even want a ban on Zverev.

The incident of Alexander Zverev hitting the chair of the umpire didn’t go down well with fans. Many fans want him to get banned, along with the suspension from the tournament.

One fan wrote, “i’m sure he is gonnz come out in the presser and say he was authentic and he feels sorry..we know the drill.”

Another fan wrote, “$2000 fine.

Meanwhile, another fan wrote, “Have to suspend Zverev. Absolute disgrace and umpires shouldn’t have to deal with such aggressive behaviour. Time to draw a line in the sand with this rubbish.”

One fan wrote, “Have you seen this? Should be tossed from this tournament at the very least.”

Another fan said, “there is no way you can let him get away with that – sure, it’s okay to be frustrated/annoyed at the umpire. Never take it out on him like that. Such a poor look, made me cringe. Can the umpire lodge a report?”

Whereas, someone else wrote, “I am not surprised at all.”

Another one said, “How about a 5 year ban for Zverev? Failing that, every crowd from now on to direct abuse at him wherever he plays?”

Fearing for the chair umpire, one fan wrote, “Look at the umpire’s leg reflexively flinching in fear. This as bad as I’ve ever seen a player threaten an umpire physically.”

Some other fan wants a ban for him and said, “6 months ban and I’m not exaggerating.

A disappointing fan wrote, “Noone should act like that especially a top ranked player.

One fan wants him suspended immediately, Zverev should be suspended immediately from the @atptour. This calls for an onsite default / violation of aggravated behaviour major offence.

Some fans also wanted the German to have longer suspension from the ATP tour.

What exactly happened?

During the super tie-break, when the score was 8-6 in favor of Glasspool and Heliovaara, Melo was serving, and the line judge and the chair umpire called return ball in. However, Melo and Zverev both thought the ball was out, including the crowd. That made Zverev furious, and after the match, vented all of his frustration in that manner.

It was reckless from Zverev to do what he did after the match as the German was punished with a tournament default from Acapulco organizers.

Currently, Zverev is playing in the singles tournament. So, it will be interesting to see whether he plays any further part in the tournament or not.
