It was only a few hours ago when some of the top names in the tennis world, like Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, and Rennae Stubbs, expressed their opinion over investment from Saudi Arabia in tennis. Recently, the ATP announced that this year’s ATP Next Gen Finals will be held in Riyadh. However, tennis legend John McEnroe expressed his dissatisfaction and became the latest inductee to join the slew of critics. The former American tennis player, who is known for expressing his views without fear, took a moment to speak about the ongoing issue and slammed the ‘hypocritical’ people.

McEnroe has always been upfront when it comes to parting ways with the oil investments and has suggested that the merger would only demolish the beauty of the game.

John McEnroe slams ‘hypocritical’ people as he joins former tennis legends

In a recent development, tennis legend John McEnroe has added his influential voice to the growing dissent against Saudi Arabian investments (with a PIF of around 650 billion) in the sport. In alignment with legends, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, and Rennae Stubbs, McEnroe expressed unequivocal reservations about the involvement of Saudi funds in tennis.

He pointed out the inconsistency in some critics who decry these partnerships while simultaneously endorsing substantial interactions between multinational corporations, governments, and nations. By shining a light on this duality, McEnroe prompts a reconsideration of the broader ethical landscape in which such decisions are made.

“I wouldn’t do it. I don’t think our sport needs it. Don’t think we’re going to benefit from it, and personally, I don’t think we should. Of course, I think there are a lot of people who are very hypocritical, who say tennis and golf shouldn’t go there and, meanwhile, watches millions of big companies and even our own governments, whom they support, go and do business there.” said McEnroe in an interview, according to Puntodebreak.

Thus, these statements by McEnroe highlight the issues currently faced by the tennis world. However, this is not the first time he has spoken against Saudi’s involvement. There have been multiple instances when he has raised his voice against the involvement.

McEnroe says Saudi’s investment will take away the glamour from the sport

A couple of months back, John McEnroe highlighted the impacts Saudi’s potential investment could bring in. He said that if the merger is completed, the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, or Rafael Nadal will get millions to show up at the event. However, other tournaments, on the same hand, will not be able to afford this kind of money.

This would have a significant impact on the players as they would not be interested in playing anywhere else than Saudi, thereby degrading the glamor of the sport. Thus, John McEnroe has been upfront in highlighting the major issues faced by the tennis community now.

With many prominent names joining hands to oppose the investment, it will now be exciting to see what the ATP’s stance would be on the case.
