Juan Martin del Potro has had an illustrious tennis career. The 33-year-old is known for his feisty forehands which gave his opponents a run for their money. Further, the towering Argentine will be remembered for his emphatic 2009 US Open victory over the Swiss legend Roger Federer. In a see-saw battle, del Potro came back from two sets to one down to win the summit clash. Moreover, it was his first and only Grand Slam title.

Last week, Juan Martin del Potro made an emotional announcement to his fans. He hinted that his appearance at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires will be his farewell tournament. Over the past few years, the former World Number 3 has constantly been suffering from injuries. As a result, it has kept him away from performing consistently at the highest level.

This shock update left his fans emotional. Additionally, former World Number 1 Andy Murray sympathized with the Argentine star, saying that he had been in that position himself.
A throwback when Roger Federer praised the forehand of Juan Martin del Potro
After the 2017 US Open, Roger Federer had tweeted a video in which del Potro could be seen delivering a powerful forehand winner. The caption read, “Juan Martin del THORtro”, comparing him to the American superhero and Marvel comic character ‘Thor’.

Juan Martin del Potro went on to defeat Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of that tournament. However, he lost to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
