When people think about Tennis, it’s always been ATP and WTA .The association, which started in 1972, focused more on streamlining tournaments in the Open Era (considered from 1968). In 2019, “a player oriented” association was created in the world of tennis by active players with 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic being the founder and they named it the ‘Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA)’.

PTPA’s motive was to advocate as the true players’ partner and to build a fair, sustainable competitive environment for players today.

Ever since its inception, PTPA split players into two groups as stars like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal vouched for unity whereas other players highlighted the importance of a separate organization.

36-year-old Pablo Andujar has spent nearly 2 decades in the ATP circuit and has been one of the members of the Players Council and in favor of the ATP working style.

While speaking with the Spanish newspaper Marca, the interviewer asked Pablo about the need for a parallel association such as the PTPA.

Former world no. 32 was quick to share his thoughts on the stand-alone players association. He said, “I think it is not necessary, but it has been a point of support. We players have realized that we are afraid of reaching more of a voice within the circuit and trying to have more strength and make ourselves heard so that certain things change.” (Translated via Google Translate)

Pablo supports Andrea Gaudenzi, the current CEO of the ATP tour, who has taken the position in 2020. As per Andujar, Andrea has good plans to grow tennis as a sport.

He further added, “We have to go together and not separate from the ATP because it would be something negative and I hope that little by little we come together and become stronger to raise our voices and make decisions.” (Translated via Google Translate)

Currently ranked 74th on the ATP tour, Andujar doesn’t find the need for two separate organizations for player welfare and feels that it’s better if everyone stick together to voice out their respective concerns.
