Daniil Medvedev recently lost his top spot to Novak Djokovic following his early exit at the Indian Wells Masters. However, with the Serb out of the ongoing Miami Masters, he can reclaim the No.1 spot if he advances to the semifinals or beyond in Miami. In a bid to regain his top stop, Medvedev should be delighted with his performance against Andy Murray in his tournament opener. Following his 6-4, 6-2 over the former World No.1, the reigning US Open champion had a few thoughts to share about his opponent.

In a recent interview, Medvedev shared how he feels about Murray, who is still putting in a lot of effort despite going through plenty of injuries in the past few years. He said, “When he was 25 or maybe 20 years old, if people would tell him what he has achieved, would he continue playing at 34 and trying to get back, get some wins.  I’m not sure he would say yes. It’s same for me. I never know how my life is going to turn, what’s gonna happen, but what he’s doing is amazing.”

Medvedev is the 27th player to claim the No.1 ATP ranking. He edged past Djokovic to seal the top spot during his semifinal run at the Mexican Open in Acapulco last month. Further, Medvedev is the first player outside the big four to reach the top spot in 18 years.

Some noteworthy victories of Medvedev that helped him in this journey are the Grand Slam title win at US Open, ATP Masters 1000 victory in Toronto last year. Medvedev was runner-up at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2021 and the Australian Open earlier this season.
