Who Is Playing in the 2023 Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup is a men’s tennis event between teams comprised of players from Europe and the rest of the world. It will be held for the sixth time in 2023 from September 22 to 24. It will be played on an indoor hard court at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

As per usual, the teams will also have a captain and a vice-captain. With the tournament right around the corner, fans are eager to know the players of each team and their captains.

Schedule for the Laver Cup 2023

The Laver Cup takes place for three days, and this year, it will take place on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of September. Every day, four matches will take place. Day sessions on the 22nd and 23rd will take place at 1 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). On the 24th, day sessions will be played at 12 p.m. PST. Night sessions will only be held on day 1 and day 2 at 7 p.m. PST.

On days 1 and 2, three singles and one doubles match will be played. Two singles match in the day session. One singles and one doubles session at night. Day 3 will begin with a doubles match and a singles match. If required, it will be followed by a singles match and then another if required.

Who is representing Team World?

John McEnroe – Captain

Since 2017, John McEnroe has been the captain of Team World. Under his lead, they have fought hard and well each year. Last year, they finally managed to win the Laver Cup. He returns this year to lead the team to victory once again. He hasn’t played on a singles tour since 1992, but he has managed to provide his expertise for tennis commentary.

Patrick McEnroe – Vice Captain

John’s brother, Patrick, will also be a part of the team and help his brother guide the Team World. Patrick used to play tennis during his heyday but couldn’t reach the level of his brother. But, he has worked with many channels and provided coverage for the sport and its events.

Ben Shelton – Player

Ben Shelton has managed to amass an immense fan following from his stint at this year’s US Open. Serving 149 mph twice, he created a record at the American slam and even played as far as the semifinal, but he couldn’t beat Novak Djokovic to reach the final. Regardless, his bombastic serve will be a big boost to the team. Additionally, his partnership with Federer’s backed On will certainly serve as a boost for his image going into the tournament.  

Frances Tiafoe – Player

Joining Shelton will be none other than Frances Tiafoe. The American player has risen in the ranks quite a bit this year and found himself in the top 10. He reached the quarterfinal of the US Open and currently ranks at 11. He won the last match in order to seal the victory of the Team World. He will definitely be able to win it again. 

Tommy Paul – Player 

While Tommy Paul seemed like a player who would rank out of the top 20, this year, he has progressed quite far. Paul reached his first slam semifinal in the Australian Open earlier this year. He also reached the final of an ATP 500, which assures that he will bring the competition to his opponents. 

Taylor Fritz – Player 

Taylor Fritz is one of the biggest stars of Team World. Being their highest ranking player at rank 8, Fritz will carry the role of being the player everyone looks up to. He became the rank 5 this year, being the only American to do it after Andy Roddick. Additionally, Fritz won his fifth and sixth title after beating a top-five player on his way to victory. He also reached the semifinal of the Monte Carlo Masters and the quarterfinal of the US Open.

Felix Auger Aliassime – Player

Felix Auger-Aliassime will be the local hero as the tournament is taking place in his home country. The player has played well overall in his career but lost control of the wheel this year. He had an average start to the year but fell off the stage as he was ousted in many tournaments in the first round. He is still hailed as a future star, and the Laver Cup is the perfect stage for him to show his real abilities. 

Francisco Cerundolo – Player 

Francisco Cerundolo will also lend his hand in order to ensure the win of his team in the tournament. The Argentinian player has played well enough this year to rise to rank 21. He picked his first grand slam wins this year in the Australian Open and the US Open. His camaraderie will certainly help in making a more cohesive team.

Christopher Eubanks – Alternate 

Christopher Eubanks earned quite the popular name for himself at the Wimbledon this year, defeating the likes of Tsitsipas and Cameron Norrie. He is part of the roster as a backup player. He is an honorable personality as he always stands up for his teammates. Although he was out of the US Open early, he will certainly not accept defeat lying down. 

Milos Raonic – Alternate

Accompanying Eubanks as a backup is Milos Raonic. He is the oldest player on their roster and has struggled with injuries since last year. He stated that he will retire after the US Open this year, but favor fortunes him as he continues playing. Now, he will provide his skills if needed. 

Who is representing Team Europe?

Bjorn Borg – Captain 

Another legend of the sport, Bjorn Borg, will captain Team Europe in the Laver Cup. His rivalry with McEnroe during their prime was quite well known, and the two players always divided fans when they were playing. Now, he will lead his team in order to make sure his regrets regarding McEnroe vanish. Winning the championship with the team four times, he will work hard to reclaim glory and win his fifth Laver Cup.

Thomas Enqvist – Vice Captain 

Thomas Enqvist has taken up the supporting role for Team Europe and will provide a hand to Borg and push his team on to victory. The former player idolized his captain during his prime. “Bjorn Borg. (He’s) really my superhero,” Enqvist said. “The reason why I wanted to play tennis. My whole life he’s been my biggest idol“. Now, he will partner with his idol to lead his team to victory.

Stefanos Tsitsipas – Player 

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked player in the Team World. He has attained a career-high ranking of 3 in 2017 and now stands at 5. His exploits this year have helped him stay in the top five. He beat players all the way to the Australian Open final. He fell down a bit since the French Open and is currently looking to return to form in the Laver Cup.

Gael Monfils – Player  

The French acrobatic Gael Monfils will also lend a helping hand to Team Europe. Playing in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown tournament this year, Monfils earned the Shot of the Year against Andrey Rublev. After a difficult bout with injuries last year, he returned this year and won his first major match since January 2022.

Andrey Rublev – Player  

Andrey Rublev is one of the strongest players of Team Europe going into the Laver Cup. The Russian player won his first Masters title this year at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He also reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open this year. His performance will certainly give his team a better chance to win. 

Casper Ruud – Player

Casper Ruud has had a great stint this season in clay tournaments. He reached the semifinal of the Italian Open, won his 10th title at the Estoril Open, and recorded his 100th win on clay. Further, he reached the final of the French Open. Now, we only have to see if he can recreate his clay talent on the hard court. 

Hubert Hurkacz – Player 

The Polish professional Hubert Hurkacz also confirmed his participation for Team Europe this year. He played well to reach the semifinal of the Cincinnati Masters after an average performance in the rest of the tour. His newly revived vigor can help the team win the competition once again.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina – Player

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the sixth member of the team, and he will provide his skills to help Team Europe. The 24-year-old attained a career-high ranking of 21 this year in August, which is a sign of his steady rise. He also reached his first Masters semifinal this year and his fifth top-10 win. His improved performance will certainly be a big boost for them. 

Arthur Fils – Alternate 

Arthur Fils will serve as a backup player to Team Europe. The 19-year-old debuted on the professional tour last year and currently has an impressive ranking of 41. He managed to snag his first major win, the US Open but saw himself eliminated in the second round. Now, he has another chance to prove himself in the Laver Cup.
