Ugo Humbert has made headlines at the Monte Carlo Masters for his phenomenal comeback against Argentine clay-court specialist Federico Coria. After dropping the first set of his opening round match, the French tennis star fought back to prevail in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, on the Court de Princes. For his brilliant victory, Humbert didn’t hold himself back from crediting his compatriot and coach, Jeremy Chardy, who has been a key factor behind his recent stellar form on the court.

Before donning the coach’s hat, Jeremy Chardy also established himself as a household figure on the men’s circuit. On top of having a former 25 ranking, the former French tennis player has one ATP Tour singles title under his belt. He was a formidable force on the clay court surfaces, marking his maiden triumph at the 2009 Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart. Aside from the ATP 250 event, Chardy also made some notable impressions at different Grand Slam tournaments.

Back in 2013, the Frenchman secured his best major run on the tour as he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Not just in the singles category but also in doubles, Chardy previously reached the championship game at the 2019 French Open, where he teamed up with his compatriot Fabrice Martin. A season before putting down his racket in 2023, the tennis veteran took on the coaching duties for Ugo Humbert, who recently heaped praise on him during this clay court season.

In a press conference at the ATP Masters 1000 event, the French player opened up about how he has made multiple improvements to his game under the tutelage of his compatriot. Humbert said, “Jeremy (Chardy) coached me very well at that time, and I was able to correct my game. I felt like I was playing too high and not varying the balls enough, not changing pace enough, and as soon as I corrected that, my game took on another dimension.”

As he was supportive of the new on-court coaching rules, the current number 15 player opened up about how his coach has been giving him some invaluable advice. Humbert said, “I love the way Jeremy coaches me. I listen to him, and as soon as he gives me any info, I am able to materialize it on the court and it helps me a lot.”
