As he amassed thirty-two ATP singles titles, including one grand slam, Andy Roddick played a number of great matches during his competitive journey. However, it is the former US Open champion’s clash against his ‘idol,’ Andre Agassi, that holds a special place in his heart, according to his recent revelations.
Back in 2000, Roddick was up against the 8-time singles Grand Slam champion in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami. Reminiscing about it, the former tennis ace opened up about his admiration for Andre Agassi, whose bold style made him a fashion icon for many, including Roddick. In the latest episode of Served with Andy Roddick, he said, “Second round, I’m still in high school, so I haven’t graduated yet, I’m 17 years old, and still have six months before I turn 18. My second-round draw is a guy named, Andre Agassi, who is my idol.”

The 41-year-old tennis veteran went on to talk about how he went above and beyond with his attire just to look like his idol. Roddick said, “Like, I wore so many sh*tty pair of neon shorts and jeans. Who wears jeans on a court in Austin, Texas, in the summer? I do because that’s how much I liked him. Jeans in pink, hot pink.” As he reminisced about his first meeting with Agassi, the American also opened up about how he couldn’t ‘comprehend the situation’ in Miami.

In their round-of-64 clash in Miami, Andre Agassi thumped his young compatriot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. However, prior to the match, Andy Roddick was already feeling quite nervous about playing against someone like Agassi in front of a jam-packed crowd in Miami. During the same conversation, the former tennis pro said, “He comes and I’m like….I don’t even know….I woke up that morning and I couldn’t comprehend the situation, it was a tournament he had won a handful of times already.”

He said, “Miami, the crowd is 15,000 people, night session. I had some high school friends coming up to watch.” What a surreal moment for Roddick!
