Daniil Medvedev has been making his way through the early rounds of the 2025 Paris Masters, showing flashes of that signature toughness, even in a season that’s had its fair share of highs and lows. In his first match, the 11th seed cruised past Jaume Munar in straight sets, 6–1, 6–3, demonstrating some solid determination and control on the indoor hard courts of La Défense Arena. That win got him into the round of 32, where he initially was supposed to face Grigor Dimitrov.

However, Dimitrov ended up withdrawing from the match, continuing a season filled with injury woes, which means the Russian has now locked in his spot in the Round of 16. With that Medvedev has also kept his year-end finals dream alive as Casper Ruud (11th) suffered a shock early exit to Daniel Altmaier. Now, in the Race to Turin rankings, only 175 points separate the two.

According to tennis journalist José Morgado on X, “Medvedev awaits Musetti or Sonego in R16 tomorrow. A match vs. Musetti would be huge for the ATP Race.”

Daniil Medvedev and Lorenzo Musetti have faced off three times on the ATP Tour, and right now, Medvedev has the edge with a 2–1 lead in their rivalry. In their latest matchup at the 2025 Italian Open in Rome, Medvedev managed to get the better of Musetti, winning 7–5, 6–4 in the fourth round. On hard courts, Medvedev has taken both of their previous matches, but when it comes to clay, Musetti is the one who dealt him his only defeat.

If Lorenzo Sonego ends up facing Medvedev, it’s worth noting that Medvedev has the upper hand in their past matches, leading 3–0 in their head-to-head record. They last met at the 2024 Dubai Championships, and it was quite the match! Medvedev made a comeback to win it 3–6, 6–3, 6–3.

So, no matter who he’s up against, Medvedev is heading into the Round of 16 in Paris with some serious momentum. Indeed, after his big win in Almaty, the Russian has really been doing well lately. But you know, he also pulled off another amazing feat at the same time?

One of the best days that Daniil Medvedev has had in tennis

Daniil Medvedev finally ended his 882-day title drought by winning his 21st tour-level crown at the Almaty Open. He had a tough match against Frenchman Corentin Moutet, coming out on top with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 after two hours and 29 minutes of play. This win was his first title since he took home the trophy in Rome back in 2023.

After his win, Medvedev shared his excitement, saying, “It is great. I was not super happy with how I played in some moments of the match, but to win feels amazing. In the most important points I played good. The last game was incredible and I am happy to win the title. It continues my funny story of 21 titles in 21 different cities.”

This win in Kazakhstan not only ended a long wait for a trophy but also put Medvedev in a tie with Jannik Sinner in an important career stat. His 21st career title has now equalled Sinner’s haul, with both of them now having 21 ATP singles titles each on the active players’ list. Pretty interesting, right? Without a doubt, the Russian gained sufficient optimism for the rest of the 2025 season with this triumph.
