Rafael Nadal has advanced considerably this year. The former world number one, however, struggled to recover from his injuries and experienced numerous setbacks. Earlier this year, the Spaniard made an incredible recovery. He won two grand slam tournaments this year, the French and the Australian Open.
The 22-time grand slam champion’s coaches contributed significantly to his successes over the course of his career. In late 2016, Carlos Moya joined Nadal’s coaching crew and after that the rest is history. The former world number one wrote an interesting extract about his current coach.

Was Rafael Nadal Carlos Mayo’s pet project?
No doubt, the Spaniard is one of the greatest sportspersons of this generation. But when he started his career in tennis, he looked up to one player the most. That was none other than Mayo, his current coach, and a fellow countryman. He was the first tennis player from his homeland to hold the top spot in the world back in 1999.
In Nadal’s autobiography, ‘Rafa: My Story’, while talking about his coaches, he mentioned his Uncle Toni Nadal, and also the former tennis player. An instance from the book says, “Moyá, who has a home in Miami and another in Madrid and is much more cosmopolitan by nature than Nadal, made the kid from Manacor his pet project.” The tennis player from Mallorca had a fantastic opportunity to study coaching techniques on the former world number one.
