Recalling that moment from the US Open 2021, when Daniil Medvedev dedicated his win to his wife

Medvedev recently came out of a gripping battle against Alexander Zverev to seal his place in the finals of the AO. Fans are now expecting a similar thrill in his match against the world no.4 Jannik Sinner. This is the first major final appearance for the Italian but Medvedev has the experience to hold the nerves in the ultimate battle of the tournaments. He did it in the US Open 2021 and won his first-ever major title on his second anniversary with his wife Daria Medvedev.

Here’s what he said after winning the title in the post-match interview. “It’s a third anniversary for me and my wife today. During the tournament, I couldn’t think of a present or anything so when I went into the final after the semis win, I thought ‘Okay, if I lose, I will have to find a present fast. When I won [the first set], the only thing I thought was ‘wow, if I lose I will have no time to find a present and so, I have to win this match’. I love you Daria,” Daniil Medvedev.

In the 2023 US Open, Novak Djokovic took his revenge after the loss in 2021 and defeated Medvedev to clinch the title on the Russian’s wedding anniversary. After the match, Djokovic jokingly said, “Daniil said too many nice words and sorry I didn’t start [my speech] congratulating you. I want to congratulate you for a fantastic tournament and sorry about the result today. And please don’t get this in the wrong way, happy anniversary to your wife. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It comes from a good place, honestly, you know. If I knew that the anniversary is today, maybe, you know, the result..”

Although the 2024 AO final will be without the ‘Big Three’ for the first time since 2005. But Medvedev is now more than ready to capitalize on this opportunity and take on the Italian challenger. He has met Sinner on 9 occasions and currently leads the H2H with a 6-3 margin. What’s your prediction for their 10th meeting?
