Dominic Thiem proved that he was a graceful winner after his epic comeback to win the title at the US Open 2020 Finals. The world number three defeated his great rival and good friend Alexander Zverev in a fifth set tie-breaker, after being two sets down and battling injury.

The camaraderie between the two men was seen as soon as the match was over as the two indulged in a warm embrace.

Zverev then made an emotional speech after receiving the runner-up trophy and broke down in tears. After receiving the winner’s trophy, Thiem’s first reaction was to console Zverev.

I wish we could have two winners today, we both deserve it,” Thiem said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

He spoke about their friendship and lauded Zverev for his efforts. The Austrian star then opined that his German counterpart will soon lift a Grand Slam trophy.

We started to know each other in 2014 when we were both ranked close to 100 or something. And we developed straight away a great friendship,” Thiem said.

When Zverev called it

Thiem recalled the time when Zverev told him that he would soon win a major title.

I remember when we played in Madrid (with) each other the finals, you told me that I’m gonna make it. I’m gonna win this title. And I tell you the same, now, here. You’re gonna make it a hundred percent. You’re gonna make your parents proud, your family proud who are at home,” Thiem expressed further.

“Also, big congrats to your team. Love when you’re around, you’re great and you definitely deserve it. You’ll definitely bring it home one day,” he added.

Dominic Thiem broke a host of records with his first Grand Slam title win. Thiem will be motivated after finally breaking the Grand Slam jinx. He won his maiden title in his 4th Grand Slam final and will now set his sights on the French Open 2020, which is on his favorite surface.
