This year, the 36-year-old tennis player has won three out of four Grand Slam titles, making him the ultimate champion on the court. His commitment to excel this year stems from a variety of factors; it may be because of his experience or the absence of his rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Àlex Corretja believes Novak Djokovic has unleashed the beast inside him

The former Spanish tennis player, in an interview with Eurosport ahead of the ATP Finals, talked about the rise behind Djokovic’s rise on the court this year. He opened up about how it was the Australian Open deportation saga that got to him and changed the game for him.

He said, “I think what happened to him in Australia led him to a long introspection.” After being out of the Australian Open for around 2 years, the world number one made a thrilling comeback this year and won his 22nd Grand Slam title at the same event. Corretja also emphasized the areas of the Serb’s life, both on and off the tennis court, where he has shown improvement this year.

The 49-year-old said, “So I think it’s like it woke up a beast inside him that he had, and he’s now controlling all his emotions much better than before. And I see now that even players or the crowd appreciate him even more than before because he’s authentic, he’s natural, he’s himself, and he’s not trying to go with a mass, saying things to make everyone happy.”

A few months ago, in an interview with Novak Books, the Serbian tennis star talked about how he had achieved his greatest goal as a tennis player. For Djokovic, his greatest achievement is his amazing record of being the world’s number-one tennis player. This year, he broke Steffi Graf’s record of being ranked number one for around 377 weeks by being on top for 389 weeks straight.

After that, when he claimed the US Open title, he got back to the number one ranking and even might end the year in the same position. He highlighted how winning a Grand Slam title three times was not a big deal, as he has done that before. However, ensuring the number one spot for sustained weeks is a huge deal for him. As he looks to finish out the year on top, what do you think about Corretja’s explanation of Djokovic’s strong game this year? Do let us know in the comments section below.
