“My wife has been a rock in my life, she has been there, gave me consistency.” Roger Federer and his wife, Mirka, have an interesting love story. Long before his first major singles win, the professional tennis duo met for the first time as a part of the Swiss team for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Their meeting marked the beginning of a new era, especially for Federer. The tennis world perhaps would not have been blessed with the heroics of the Swiss Maestro if he didn’t have Mirka’s support.

As Federer called time on his illustrious career last year, he thanked his wife for having braved her way through his “goofy side on the road with my team for over 20 years.” Now, fellow Swiss legend, who first met Federer in an official match on the ATP Tour in the 2000 Marseille final, revealed Mirka’s impact on Federer’s career.

In the book The Roger Federer Effect, Marc Rosset talked about Federer’s meeting with Mirka and how he owed his success to her. Further, he even went on to give an example of Novak Djokovic and his wife, Jelena.

Rosset said, “The most important meeting was with Mirka, his wife. I always say: he owes 50 percent of his success to her. Without her, his career would not have been possible. She always had his back. Even when their family grew and the covetousness around him.

“When you have four children, nannies, and your team, that’s a lot of people. You have to organize many things when traveling around with such an entourage.”

Further, he went on to add, “It’s certainly helpful because she knows what it takes in this sport. But it’s not the decisive factor. Jelena Djokovic, Novak’s wife, hadn’t played on the Tour. The most important thing is that you have a stable woman who always supports you and sometimes puts her interests aside for yours.”
