The tennis world has seen plenty of legends climbing up the ranks from college tennis. John McEnroe, the seven-time Grand Slam champion himself was a product of college tennis. The sheer volume of tennis stars produced at the college level is astounding. Americans might need to lay their eyes on an upcoming prodigy. The 19-year-old product of Georgia Tennis quit college tennis yesterday and turned pro.

His name is Ethan Quinn. The 1.91m tall American is currently ranked 477 in the world. Despite not starting his pro career yet, Quinn already has prior Challenger Tour experience, mainly the ones played in America.

When the 19-year-old prodigy decided to make the tough call of quitting college tennis, the Georgia Tennis team’s coach wished him well for his future endeavors. The coach said, “This was a tough decision for Ethan because of the love he has for his teammates and the University of Georgia. It has been an honor to coach such a tremendous young man and I can’t thank you enough for the positive impact he’s had on our program. You will always be a damn good Dawg, EQ!

The coach’s heartfelt message showed how much Quinn meant to Georgia Tennis. However, every good thing must come to an end and this one marks the beginning of a new chapter in Quinn’s career. It also might solidify America’s chance of having a new Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick in 2003. However, it is way too early in making any sort of  bold predictions.

Who can end America’s 20-year drought?

Well, for starters, Ethan Quinn is not the immediate favorite to be the next American Grand Slam champion. Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe are the currently established top 10 players in America. Meanwhile, the young gun Sebastian Korda continues to climb the ranks and prove his mettle. The likes of Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul are also having a solid season so far. On the other hand, Serena Williams‘ childhood coach, Rick Macci continues to find talented players in the USTPA every day.

Adding Quinn to the same bracket would put the American under immense pressure. However, the 19-year-old has also received a wildcard for this year’s US Open and he will be looking to make a statement in his first-ever slam main draw appearance.
