One of the all-time greatest tennis rivalries was between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. During their professional careers, they played against each other 14 times. The 1980 Wimbledon final was among the most illustrious matches between these tennis legends.

During a charity match, McEnroe and Borg recreated their Wimbledon finals from 1980 and 1981 in front of a celebrity-packed crowd at Buckingham Palace.

John McEnroe once played against Bjorn Borg at Buckingham Palace

Bjorn Borg, the Tennis Hall of Famer, once played against his long-time rival John McEnroe in a charity match at Buckingham Palace. McEnroe and Borg recreated their Wimbledon finals from 1980 and 1981 in front of a celebrity-packed crowd at the palace. Art Garfunkel, British former motorsports champion, Damon Hill, and Pat Cash, the former Wimbledon champion, were among the public figures.

The charity match between Borg and McEnroe was arranged by Prince Andrew. He was watching and laughing from the stands as McEnroe kept the crowd excited.

Andrew said“This is a unique event. It will never, ever be repeated,”  He planned to raise $1.5 million for a children’s charity through this event.

McEnroe was having fun on the court while he was playing against his long-time rival Borg. The former American tennis player missed an easy overhand smash. He even slipped on the court at one point. He shouted after his slip, “You’ll hear from my lawyer.” 

After the extraordinary match between the two legendary tennis players, Borg stated, “It is an honour for us to play here. It is a good cause and hopefully we will be invited back.”

Bjorn Borg’s legendary stats

The Swedish former world No. 1, Borg won 63 singles titles during his tennis career. It included Four doubles titles and 11 grand slam triumphs. He won three of his eleven grand slam titles without dropping any set. The Swedish tennis legend won the 1976 Wimbledon, 1978 French Open, and 1980 French Open.

Additionally, from 1978 to 1980, Borg won three straight channel slams (French and Wimbledon) and had 14 straight wins in major semifinals of the tournaments. In 1987, he was subsequently inducted into the Hall of Fame because of his illustrious achievements as a tennis player.
