Nikola Pilic on how Novak Djokovic has always been ambitious since his teenage days
In a recent conversation with Vecernje novosti, as reported by The Age, Djokovic’s childhood coach revealed how he once called five under-15 players to his office, asking them about their goals. While one player revealed his wish to be a ‘good tennis player,’ the other wanted to play in the Bundesliga.
Djokovic, on the other hand, spoke candidly about his ambition to be the ‘world No.1 player,’ as the other four laughed. Nikola Pilic stated, “One said he wanted to be a good tennis player, the second to play in Bundesliga and Novak said, ‘I’d like to be the world No.1!’ The other four laughed.”
Though he was a bit skeptical about the Serb’s ‘number one’ goal, the Croatian coach said, “But according to all parameters I knew he’d be at the international level.” While revealing his ambitions, Pilic also compared Djokovic to other tennis greats, and Roger Federer had to take a back seat.
