Andy Roddick, the American tennis legend, shared some interesting details in a recent exclusive interview. In his highly successful career, he may not have been able to achieve as much success as the Big Three in his era, but he has no regrets. Despite narrowly missing out on several Grand Slam titles, Roddick looks back at his career with pride and a unique perspective.

He has had the opportunity to play alongside and train with some of the greatest athletes in history, including Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, and Serena Williams. Such experiences have given him immense satisfaction. During his playing days, Andy Roddick had several memorable interactions with the Big Three: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Despite being overshadowed by these players for most of his career, Roddick has always held them in high regard and has been gracious in defeat.

Roddick shares his delight at playing with Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Tomy Brady, and more

Andy Roddick won his first ATP title in 2001 and went on to win a total of 32 titles, including one Grand Slam title, the US Open in 2003. He reached the Wimbledon final three times but was unable to clinch the title, losing to Roger Federer in all of those finals. Roddick also played a crucial role in the United States’ Davis Cup triumph in 2007.

Despite his success, Roddick’s career was often overshadowed by the likes of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. The GOATs had dominated the tennis world during his era. In a recent exclusive Q&A session with The Spun, a subsidiary of Sports Illustrated, Roddick shared, “I don’t spend much time thinking about it. It was what it was. It’s going to be great to look back at it though. Roger, at that time, was the greatest.”

One of the things that make Roddick’s career stand out is the unique experiences he had off the court. He had the opportunity to train with Serena Williams, and her father Richard Williams. Roddick has often credited the Williams sisters for inspiring him to work harder and be more professional. Roddick also had the opportunity to play alongside and against some of the greatest athletes in history. He played against Michael Jordan in a charity basketball game. The former tennis player had even caught a pass from Tom Brady in a flag football game.

He added, ” It’s kinda crazy, but at the end of the day, I got to guard Michael Jordan, I got to catch a pass from Tom Brady, I saw the best there was in the world, I got to train with Serena Williams. I don’t know if I’d trade those experiences for anything.”

However, he obviously would’ve liked to add more Major titles under his name. Talking about the same, he further clarified, “Obviously, I would’ve loved to win two more points at Wimbledon a couple of times. That would’ve changed the narrative a little bit more. But I’m happy to see what I did and the history that was made along the way.”

Roddick once shared his thoughts on how legends of various eras have impacted social issues

In a discussion with Cure in 2019, the 2003 US Open champion talked about his motivation for participating in social change initiatives. According to him, tennis is undervalued despite the numerous efforts made by both active and retired players to assist underprivileged and marginalized communities worldwide. During the interview, Roddick mentioned several names, including Billie Jean King, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams. The former world number one stated that these players have made significant strides in promoting literacy, education, and equality.
