The tennis courts are ready for a revolutionary makeover as the All England Club gears up to release new changes. These changes highlight packages with artificial intelligence commentary, at Wimbledon Championships. It is a new path that could lead to AI commentary for live games in the future. IBM and its innovative Watsonx generative AI technology are teaming up with Wimbledon for this innovative makeover.

Wimbledon has been implementing AI technology for several years, generally for statistical analysis and player power indexing. All highlight videos during this year’s tournament will be accompanied by AI-generated audio commentary and captions.  The innovative videos can be found on the Wimbledon website and app. The new moves will allow tennis enthusiasts to experience an entirely new and absorbing way to interact with the matches.

The prestigious tournament plans to supplement live human commentary with AI for outer court matches. While AELTC does not currently have plans to replace human commentators, IBM Watson has big plans. They wish to develop an AI commentary system that could be utilized for future matches.

The possibilities are endless, allowing for exciting avenues of customization, such as emulating unique voices, languages, and styles. Fans will be able to witness video highlights like never before with the aid of AI-generated commentary.  The new move will enable fans to capture every intricate and exciting moment of the matches.

John McEnroe’s irreplaceable insights and engaging banter are emphasized over and over again by Kevin Farrar, who leads IBM Sports Partnerships. However, he also notes that AI is specifically designed to support human commentary rather than replace it in the field of tennis. According to the Telegraph, he shared, “You can’t replace John McEnroe doing commentary, that human element always needs to be there. It’s very much supplementing and complementing.”

Farrar also added, “For Wimbledon, it’s about providing commentary in the future on matches that don’t currently have human commentary – like the seniors, juniors, wheelchair [events].”

Renfrewshire, Scotland, aims to become a hub for budding tennis talent. It follows in the footsteps of their homeboy, former world number one Andy Murray.  The council has allocated over £300,000 to develop and refurbish tennis courts as part of a project led by the Lawn Tennis Association of the UK.
