There have been quite a few recurrent controversies and debates surrounding the game of tennis over the years. The act of grunting on the tennis court is definitely one of them. Many have argued that a player’s grunting can cause an unfair distraction to their opponents and hamper their hearing ability during the middle of the point. However, it is now widely accepted that grunting is a result of intense exertion that some players need to resort to while putting the ball on the other side of the court. It has become a common part of the game today. American ATP star Taylor Fritz recently came across a grunting statistic involving himself and couldn’t hide his bewilderment.

Fritz is generally not known for his grunting. Thus, recent statistics on players who grunt loudly during their match took the American No.1 by surprise.

Grunting stat of tennis players shocks Taylor Fritz

There have been a lot of tennis stars with loud and famous grunts over the years. And grunters among the current crop of players aren’t an exception. Many top-ranked players in both the ATP and WTA tours are known to be serial grunters, including the likes of grand slam winners Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka.

Recently, a list of the top 5 active tennis players who grunt the most from both the men’s and women’s categories was released by Void Media. American tennis star Taylor Fritz made it to the list, to his dismay.

Fritz was placed at the 4th spot on the list of male tennis players with the maximum audible grunts. He shared the list in his Instagram story, and expressed shock seeing his name on the grunters’ list, “THIS HAS TO BE CAP 🧢 I’m now questioning everything… Am I a crazy grunter?”.

Unsurprisingly, Carlos Alcaraz topped the men’s players’ list, whereas Aryna Sabalenka secured the first spot as far as the women’s players are concerned. Famous grunters on the tennis circuit have always been a common occurrence, nonetheless.

Famous grunters in tennis from the past

There have been many superstars in the world of tennis, who were also known for their loud grunts. Many believe that the trend of grunting in tennis originated from the likes of Jimmy Connors and Monica Seles, who were also known to be loud grunters apart from their huge success as players.

Since then, many hugely successful and famous players happened to be loud grunters on the court. Maria Sharapova, Serena and Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal – all these giants of the game have tested the strength of their vocal cords time and again while vying to win a point from their opponents. Therefore, Taylor Fritz can certainly claim to be in great company!
