The Chinese player Shuai Zhang was tied with her opponent at 5-5, 30-30 in the first set. She asked to check the ball mark which was ruled out as out by the chair umpire. As she went to the net to check the ball mark, her opponent, Hungarian player Kiara Toth, went and cleared the ball mark with her shoes. Feeling a sense of injustice, Zhang retired from the match and Toth celebrated in full glory after the results.

Australian tennis player Ellen Perez also condemned Toth’s “disrespect” towards the game and her opponent.
