The war between Russia and Ukraine is still raging on. Many sanctions were put in place by several organizations around the world. Even the All England Tennis Club (AELTC) in 2022 announced that players from Russia and Belarusia were not allowed to play in the grass-court championship. This decision was taken without the consultation of the players. John Millman, a member of the ATP board recently gave some shocking details about the move taken by Wimbledon.

This decision split the followers of tennis. Some supported the decision while many were against it. The decision was taken as as a sign of support to Ukrainian players around the world as they had to serve their country.

Wimbledon makes important decision hastily
John Millman, a member of the ATP player council, recently shared some events that led to the ban imposed by Wimbledon. Millman led the team that represented Russian and Belarusian players. The player council received word that the government of England was clear in its directive of Russian and Belarusian players.

Millman said that the committee had two options in front of them. They could direct Russian and Belarusian players to play under a neutral flag. Additionally, they could also make them sign a confidential document in which they denounced their support for the ongoing war. Their second option was to deny entry to Russian and Belarusian players.

The AELTC went on to vote for the second option without consulting the players from the two countries. This unfortunate decision meant that Wimbledon received a lot of flak from the WTA and the ATP. However, the organization has turned around its decision this year.

This led to great backlash as Russian and Belarusian players even called in order to plead for their case. Almost all were ready to sign a waiver saying they did not support the war. Additionally, they also refused to do any media if it had an inkling of propaganda in favor of Russia.
The prizemoney would be donated to Ukraine aid. If any players from the two countries won any prize, they wouldn’t attend the trophy presentation. One Russian player even said that they would play doubles with a player from Ukraine.

Ban on players lifted
After great discussion this year, Wimbledon has lifted the ban it imposed last year. The AELTC drew great criticism last year and has decided to reverse the policy. This comes as great news for players like Aryna Sabalenka and Daniil Medvedev. Both the players said that they were happy about the news as they had their eye on the prestigious trophy.
