The Australian Open 2023 has seen another controversy erupt recently. A major controversial event happened last week when Novak Djokovic was playing Alex de Minaur. As usual, the arena was filled with Serbian fans cheering on their tennis legend, Nole. Despite his hamstring injury, he gave a brilliant performance in the match that shocked the tennis community. However, during the match, another grave incident took place that didn’t look good for Serbia.

An officer of the Australian Open tried to confiscate some Serbian flags from the audience outside the court. This incident took place before the match. The Serbian fans are understandably offended by this and raged against the officer. However, the officer had not meant to confiscate the Serbian flags but had mistaken them for Russian flags which were banned from the tournament.

Australian Open officer needs a booklet to identify the Serbian flag

Owing to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Australian Open has decided to ban Russian and Belarusian flags from the tournament. While the Russian players can still compete, they will be required to represent a neutral flag. No display of Russian patriotism is allowed during, before, or after the matches. This includes the Russian national anthem and their flag.

Before the match between Djokovic and de Minaur, an officer of the Australian Open tried to confiscate the flags of some Serbian fans, who were there to support Nole. The fans were stopped by the official who was confused by the flag. He thought it was a Russian flag and tried to take them down.

“You’re f*cking racist,” says one of the fans as the officer talks to them. He tells them that the Russian flags are banned from the tournament. “It’s a Serbian flag,” the fan continues to educate the official. “Serbia is the central region of the Balkans in Europe. Do you know what a country is?”

Serbian fan threatens AO 2023 officer about posting on YouTube

The officer is visibly angry at this commotion and asks the fans to stop filming the scene. However, the fans were further enraged by this and were heard saying, “Call the police, arrest us, you will be on YouTube”. The official is then branded as a racist when a fan says, “White, blue, red, that’s red, blue, white. These racists don’t allow certain flags”.

The official then takes out a booklet to confirm if the flag is really Serbian. All this while the group of fans filmed the entire altercation on video. At last, a female officer politely confirms that the flag is indeed Serbian. At this, the Australian Open official storms off, calling the Serbs “f*cking idiots!”.
