Many of tennis’ greatest rivalries have eventually turned into unlikely friendships. From Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert’s era to that of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s, tennis has seen many great friendships. Talking about rivalries, one of the most exciting moments in men’s tennis history occurred during the heated rivalries between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Unfortunately, Federer’s retirement puts an end to their longtime rivalry. Their competitive rivalry resulted in several historic moments for the sport. Along with that, a once bitter rivalry has given way to a healthy amount of respect and friendship. Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick was earlier seen discussing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s friendship.

Andy Roddick on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s friendship

Earlier, Andy Roddick was on Tennis Channel Live to talk about Roger Federer’s last game at the Laver Cup 2022. During the conversation, Roddick was seen discussing ‌how Rafa and Federer carried the friendship trend of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert to the next generation.

Yeah, I mean, the relationship on a personal level between Rafa and Roger is certainly something Martina can relate to. They almost invented that dynamic with Martina and Chrissy. And I think Roger and Rafa have lovingly carried that torch,” said the 40-year-old Roddick. 

He further went on to state, “But you know, Roger wants to be out there with the people he competed against. He made Novak better. Novak made Rafa better. Rafa made Roger better. They made each other more complete.

The duo shared the court for one last time on an emotional Friday night at London’s O2 Arena. Federer and Nadal lost a tight doubles match to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe with a score of 4-6, 7-6(2) 11-9.

The last time when Federer and Rafa met in Laver Cup

Back In 2017, Nadal and Federer faced Team World’s Sam Querrey and Jack Sock in the inaugural Laver Cup. They started the match off strong and cruised to 6-4 in the opening set.

However, Querrey and Sock fought back in the second set, winning 6-1 to tie the match. Nadal and Federer eventually kept their cool in the super tiebreaker and emerged victorious with 10-5.
