“Anyone who has watched our journey has seen us grow together on the court and off the court,” Katie Boulter once said, reflecting on her bond with beau Alex De Minaur. Boulter and De Minaur are amongst the most popular couples in the tennis world. They started dating each other in March 2020, and four years later, on December 23, 2024, the couple announced their engagement. The duo often shares glimpses of their adorable moments with their fans on social media. They have a wonderful chemistry, but Boulter recently identified a “red flag” behavior in De Minaur. Despite being the ray of sunshine that brightens Katie Boulter’s day, the Aussie found himself in troubled waters amidst the massive power outage in Madrid. So, what really happened?

Alex de Minaur was supposed to take on Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the R32 of the Madrid Open on Monday. However, due to the major blackout in Spain and its neighboring countries, several matches, including De Minaur’s match, were postponed to Tuesday. Following the postponement, the World No. 7 posted on X, “Don’t mind this off the grid thing 😂😂😂. On the 3rd walk off the day and finally got some service to check on the rest of the world 👀🙏👌🤷‍♂️.”

Katie Boulter, who was knocked out of the tournament by Jasmine Paolini in the R64, had marked her presence in De Minaur’s previous match against Lorenzo Sonego, but due to her busy schedule, she had to leave the Spanish capital after that. In her absence, the Aussie had a free day to himself once the power outage occurred.

Because of the outage, De Minaur wasn’t even able to respond to Boulter’s texts. Or that’s what he told her. And, she was not buying it. Responding to his post on X, Boulter took a cheeky dig at De Minaur, writing, Imagine blaming a country blackout for not texting me back all day. Elite 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩behaviour.

Why did the blackout occur, though, and how did the players react to this? Well, according to a statement released by the Red Electrica de España, the Transmission System Operator in Spain, “Protocols have been activated to restore the electricity supply in collaboration with companies in the sector, after the outage that occurred in the Iberian Peninsula’s system. The causes are being analyzed, and every resource is being dedicated to solving the issue. We will continue to report on the situation.” However, some reports claim it was due to a rare atmospheric phenomenon causing grid instability.

Due to this, several matches in the Madrid Open were halted mid-way, including Grigor Dimitrov’s match against Jacob Fearnley. Coco Gauff was left stranded in the middle of her on-court interview when this incident took place. Later, she said, “It was pitch-black, and I got the gist that the power went out. I thought it was just us, and then I realized it was the whole country, that’s just insane.”

Continuing further, she added, “So far, the toughest thing has been not being able to shower after my match. There’s no running water so I just had to take baby wipes and wipe myself, spray some perfume, and call it a day. I don’t even think we’ll be able to go back to the hotel as the traffic lights are out. So it’s just crazy how much we depend on electricity. It’s really insane.”

Russian tennis star Mirra Andreeva also revealed how eager she was to wrap up the match quickly in order to avoid further delays. Donna Vekic shared her coach, Sasha Bajin’s, bemused reaction while eating dinner in candlelight.

Even Frances Tiafoe shared his thoughts about this “crazy power outrage” on his IG stories. So, just like Katie Boulter, everyone had complaints. But Boulter’s concerns surrounding her beau not picking up her phone showcased the love and camaraderie between this power couple.

Alex de Minaur recently spoke about how supportive they have been in each other’s journey through thick and thin.

Alex de Minaur reveals how he and Katie Boulter pull each other up through tough times

In December 2024, Katie Boulter revealed how Alex de Minaur’s on-court success helped her push her own boundaries even further and back her own abilities. “I feel like we’ve really helped each other in so many different ways. Firstly, he’s there for advice. He’s got some credence, so I have to take his advice on board, and I don’t mind listening to him once in a while,” the Brit said.

Boulter also once revealed that Alex de Minaur always puts her before himself and takes care of the people around him. “He’s my best example of what I want to be,” she remarked.

And, Boulter reciprocates with all the love and care.
