Roger Federer’s love story is no secret. After a successful 13 years of companionship together, Roger and Mirka are one of the “it” couples of tennis. However, it was not love at first sight for Mirka. The Swiss former professional tennis player talks about how she first met her now husband. While most people believe that Federer and Vavrinec met at the 2000 summer Olympics, it is not true.

Christopher Clarey’s ‘The Master- Roger’s biography’, records Mirka’s side of the story. Writers like Simon Graf have also made it a point to include this super adorable love story in their editions of Roger’s biography. Roger has, on multiple occasions, confessed that his wife is “his rock” and crucial to his successful endeavors on the court.

Roger Federer didn’t meet Mirka for the first time at the Olympics

While many sources report that Federer and Mirka first met at the 2000 Olympics, it is not the case. The two certainly played their first doubles match together in the tournament. However, they were previously acquainted with each other at various tournaments and in the National Tennis Center at Bienne where Mirka trained privately or attended training camps.

While talking about her first impression of Federer, Miroslava Vavrinec confessed that she wasn’t very impressed with the teenager at first.

“I was rather calm and disciplined. Roger made a lot of noise,” she told the Swiss newspaper Le Matin (The Morning) in one of her interviews. “He sang Backstreet Boys songs at the top of his lungs,” she added.

However, as they say- opposites attract. Mirka found Roger quite unlike her and that interested her more. “He was funny, full of life, he made me laugh. The coaches sometimes had to kick him off the courts to get some peace.”

However, as she told the same Swiss newspaper, she did not realize that he was taken with her. She was three years elder than him and probably did not pay much attention to his teenage efforts.

Mirka’s tennis career ended soon after her debut in 1998. She went down with a nasty foot injury in 2002 which prevented her from playing anymore. However, it is worth mentioning that before she retired from professional tennis, she was a top-100-ranked player.

Mirka married Federer in April 2009 in a super-private ceremony with only the closest friends and family. Even during their dating period, Roger and Mirka kept out of the publicity. What do you think of this power couple? Let us know in the comments.
