Arguably the greatest tennis player ever, Roger Federer has shown pure class and elegance on the tennis court throughout his career. In an interview, 24-time Grand Slam champion Margaret Court once revealed the secret behind his majestic tennis on the court.

The Australian tennis player believed that Federer’s junior coach, Peter Carter, who is a former Australian tennis player, helped him achieve greatness. Notably, Carter passed away in 2002, one year before Federer won his first Wimbledon title.

Margaret Court revealed why Roger Federer has become one of the greatest

In a statement back in 2010, Court said, Roger Federer had an Aussie coach when he was growing up – he has that old Australian style. He’s won Wimbledon but he was brought up in a country with no grasscourts. I wasn’t brought up on claycourts yet I won five French Opens. Hard work is so important. My coach told me if I could hit the ball over a hundred times in a row, and I was fit enough, I would beat anybody in the world.

It is worth noting that Peter Carter discovered Federer‘s talent in Basel, and later he would talk about him back home with his colleagues. Unfortunately, Carter died in a car accident at the age of 37 in 2002, a year before Federer won his first Grand Slam title in Wimbledon.

In an interview back in 2019, Federer became emotional talking about Carter’s role in his life. “I hope he would be proud… I guess he didn’t want me to be a wasted talent,” Federer said, with tears flowing through his eyes.

Court blasted Serena Williams after her retirement at the US Open

Recently, Margaret Court garnered plenty of criticism after making some controversial comments about Serena Williams’ retirement at the US Open. Notably, she talked about admiring Serena as a player; however, she felt she never got any admiration from the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Moreover, she felt her accomplishments as a tennis player weren’t recognized like others’. She also talked about Serena’s era being easy and how she would have loved to play in this current era. Notably, Serena retired from professional tennis after the third-round loss to the Aussie player Ajla Tomljanovic in the US Open.

Court also took a dig at Serena, as she did not mention her opponent’s name in the post-match speech. Serena has been chasing Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles since winning her 23rd at the Australian Open in 2017. Following the American’s retirement, Court still remains the only player to win 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
