Brett Connors has provided an intriguing insight into why Stefanos Tsitsipas might have previously fallen from his top rank. In his latest podcast, “Advantage Connors,” he delved into his love story with Paula Badosa, popularly dubbed as “Tsitsidosa”. Drawing a connection between the two, he engaged in a discussion of how Tsitsipas’ performance could have been “affected” because of his personal life.

Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled with his performance and fell out of the ATP top-10 ranking in the latter half of last year. Referring to his continuously struggling form, Brett Connors said, “For him to fall out of the top 10 doesn’t seem right. You know, it seems like that was something wrong.” While in reality, different reasons may exist for the downfall, Connors referred to the fan opinion that blames Tsitsipas’ girlfriend.

“He’s gotten into a, you know, highly publicized relationship with Paula Badosa. You know, and she’s been hurt. And he’s had his, you know, stuff. So that some of the criticism might have been directed to that as he distracted maybe, or whatever,” Brett further added.

The former World No. 3 Tsitsipas, who started dating Badosa in May last year, isn’t shy about sharing his romantic life on social media. But in the last few days, Paula Badosa’s name has been associated with injuries leading to withdrawals from the Indian Wells and defeats in the Stuttgart Open and Miami Open. Badosa herself has also fallen from her top ranking.

But Stefanos Tsitsipas has always tried to be there for her and push her to do better. However, some have questioned how this might have led him to neglect his own performance on court.

Although he lost the Barcelona Open to Casper Ruud yesterday, Tsitsipas’ Monte-Carlo Masters victory and a top 10 position have eliminated a part of the doubt. Even Connors pointed to that and said, “But I think it’s good to see him back in the top 10. Because he’s such a good personality.” However, his journey has not been smooth up until now. After his defeat in the Barcelona Open final, Tsitsipas opened up about his physical and mental struggles.

Tsitsipas’ winning streak of ten matches came to an end during the Barcelona Open final. After 91 minutes of struggling with his form, Tsitsipas faced a defeat with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Following the match, Tsitsipas’ disappointment was apparent. “I wasn’t playing my best tennis this week in Barcelona. Throughout the whole week I didn’t feel like my shots had the same effect as they did in Monte Carlo,” said Stefanos Tsitsipas, referring to his final match at the Monte Carlo against the same rival, Casper Ruud.

He further added, “Today it felt like I didn’t have the mental capacity to even fight. Even if I wanted to push myself to fight, Casper was just too good today.” He might have failed to conquer his first title at the Barcelona Open. But he is hopeful about his next tournament at the Madrid Open. As he moves forward, all eyes will also be on him to witness how he creates a balance between his professional and personal lives.
