Ask Martina Navratilova, the 66-year-old tennis legend, who has seen it all during her career. At her peak, the former World Number 1 was trouble to play against as she dominated her opponents on the court. Navratilova found success not only in singles but also in the doubles circuit. Recently, a unique record of her resurfaced.

It was the year 1983. Navratilova was entering the season on the back of a largely successful 1982 year which saw her win the French Open and Wimbledon singles titles. Additionally, she also the Australian Open, the French Open, and the Wimbledon titles in women’s doubles. 1983 proved to be a golden year for Navratilova as she achieved something that hasn’t been claimed by Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. However, the tennis legend expressed sadness over one particular incident.

Martina Navratilova lost just 1 match in 1983

The 66-year-old went on to achieve one of the most rare feats the tennis world has seen. In the 87 matches that she played in 1983, Navratilova lost just 1 match, recording a feat of 86-1. It resulted in a 98.9 win percentage which is the highest in a single season.

However, Navratilova was dejected with the one solitary loss that she had in the entire season. It came at the 1983 French Open, where she lost in the fourth round against Kathleen Horvath of the United States. Navratilova was the top seed in the tournament but a shock defeat upset her plans. Reflecting on her loss, Navratilova said, “I can tell you I couldn’t get the ball past the service line in the third set.”

Nonetheless, she won a great number of titles that season. The 66-year-old ushered her domination, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships, and the US Open title. Additionally, she also won titles at these tournaments in women’s doubles as well.
