Even since their debuts in the mid-90s, Venus and Serena Williams have succeeded in positioning themselves as two of the greatest players of all time. With their devastating performance in place, the two have regularly made headlines for their records and accolades. However, the two once came out of the tennis court, making headlines for their reaction to a controversy surrounding Andre Agassi.

Going back in time to 2009, Andre Agassi released his autobiography ‘Open‘. While his story received love from many, it became a controversial book owing to an admission by Agassi about consuming a drug. A large section of society criticized the 8-time Grand Slam champion for his actions. But, the Williams sisters opted out of giving their views on the controversy.

In his autobiography ‘Open’, the former World No. 1 admitted consuming the addictive drug crystal methamphetamine in 1997. Additionally, he also admitted that he misled ATP to get away with the ban. The admission opened doors for views and opinions from the entire tennis world. However, despite an attempt from the press, it failed to robe in comments from the Williams sisters.

Being in a devastating form, Venus and Serena were in Doha, playing the WTA finals when the controversy made the headlines. Day two of the round robin, Venus Williams suffered a three-set loss to sister Serena Williams. Following the loss, she headed to the press conference where she opened up about Agassi’s controversial confession.

“I’m sure his book will sell,” she said. “But I can’t say anything about Andre Agassi’s life,” she further added.

Even though Serena celebrated her win over Venus, she had a similar approach in her comments towards the controversial declaration. Serena asserted by saying, “I don’t know what crystal meth is, that’s my reaction.” 

Making sure to keep herself out of the controversy, she further added, “I haven’t read anything about his book.”

While the Williams sisters refrained from commenting on the controversy, that wasn’t the case with other players. Numerous A-listers like Martina Navratilova, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer came out in public to express their views on the American’s confession.
