Elina Svitolina Reveals How Tennis Helps Relationship With Gael Monfils

Fifth seed Elina Svitolina made it into the last 32 after defeating Ann Li at the French Open 2021. It is her seventh consecutive entry in the third round at Roland-Garros.

Interestingly, the 26-year-old finished both her previous matches in straight sets. Also, on both occasions, she recovered a break in the second set.

However, more than her performance, her on-court comment about fiance Gael Monfils caught all eyes. Elina joked, “Well, he always has to agree with me because I am the boss in the house.”

Later, in the post-match press conference, the Ukrainian star opened up on her relationship with the ATP’s World No.15. In essence, she highlighted how being tennis professionals helps their bonding.

Before coming to Paris, Monfils took Svitolina on a road trip to Switzerland and proposed to her. She accepted the proposal, and the duo has been inseparable ever since.

Talking to the press, the current World No.6 tried to better her previous ‘I am the boss’ comment. For this, she stated that relationships are a two-way street and that communication is paramount.

“The good boss is the one who understands because I think it has to be both ways, and I think relationships go both ways. You have to listen, and you have to speak. It is all about the communication,” Elina explained.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian added that every individual has their own set of opinions. In this matter, they gave an underlying advantage given their same professional background.

Elina continued, “We speak a lot. It is really helpful we both compete at the highest level of tennis. We understand what we are both going through. It is really amazing to have someone by your side who can share the same emotions and the same problems.”

However, he will appear at Roland-Garros, cheering for her fiance in the third round and forwards. Svitolina will face Czech professional Barbora Krejčíková in the third round.
