After Djokovic’s big 378 weeks at no.1, whether he or Graf is the all-time No. 1 is a matter of opinion. However, by introducing a new metric to compare the two players, Pam Shriver sparked an important conversation about how we measure greatness in tennis. Shriver took to her Twitter account to talk about this new metric, and true to the nature of tennis fans, her tweet was flooded with comments and retweets.

Fans are divided in their stance of siding with Shriver’s metric of comparing the percentage number of weeks to decide on the greatness between two players. What’s more, some players have also come up with their own metrics of deciding on who is the greatest player based on their #1 ranking. While the tennis world remains divided over this metric, Djokovic fans are busy celebrating his new success.

Pam Shriver suggests a new way to rank tennis players like Novak Djokovic and Steffi Graf

Novak Djokovic recently broke Steffi Graf’s record for the most weeks at world No. 1, but former tennis player Pam Shriver believes that there should be a new metric to compare the two players. Shriver argues that the total number of weeks at world No. 1 should not be the only criteria to determine the all-time No. 1. Instead, she proposes a new metric: the percentage of total weeks spent at No. 1.

Tennis enthusiasts on Twitter have lapped up the conversation, and it is all they’re talking about on Twitter right now.

Paul McNamee simply pointed out that this metric is “not the way to go.”

Another fan drew out the math in order to explain their stance.

Many fans have also pointed out how, if Shriver’s metric is taken into consideration, it would be Monica Seles at the top instead of Steffi Graf.

Another tennis enthusiast has simply pointed out that this tweet aims to “provoke” Djokovic fans.

While some fans have sided with Shriver, most are against her percentage metric.

Others have directly trolled Shriver for her suggestion.

Does this metric really work?

Some fans believe Shriver’s proposal for a new metric is a compelling one. By looking at the percentage of total weeks spent at No. 1, we can compare players across eras and tours in a more meaningful way.

This metric would also take into account the differences between the men’s and women’s tours, and provide a more accurate reflection of a player’s dominance. However, the fact that she tried to root for Graf over Djokovic, who just broke the record, sounded “desperate” to some fans.
