The swoon-worthy love story of Mirka and Roger Federer is something that has tucked the heart of tennis enthusiasts over the years. Be it the secretive beginning of their relationship or the emotional farewell of Roger Federer, the couple stood by each other. So, when a reporter once asked how Federer felt about Mirka’s presence on the tour after Pete Sampras complemented his wife, the Swiss Maestro had the perfect answer.

Both Mirka and Roger Federer found a balance to juggle the on-court and family life. However, he has always credited his wife for supporting him and investing everything she had in her family.

After Pete Sampras credited his wife, this is what Roger Federer had to say about Mirka…

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had secured a second-round victory at the 2014 Indian Wells Masters. According to Inside Tennis, at the post-match conference, a reporter mentioned that Pete Sampras credited his wife for his success. Sampras also pressed on the importance of her presence on the tour.

Posing a similar question to Federer, the reporter asked about the role of Mirka in his life. To this, the Swiss Maestro said, “I think every wife is important. Mine is no different,” noting that she played an important role in his career. However, the couple has four kids and Federer knew she had to look after them too. So, he noted, “But we have kids and she’s seen 900 matches, I guess. She’s okay missing one once in a while and not coming to practices anymore.”

Crediting her for her unwavering support, he said, “She always thought in my best interest for me and my career and never pulled me away [from tennis].” Adding more, he stated, “It would have been easy for her to say, “Look, can we not change it up or do it different?” I hear stories.”

However, the only thing that Mirka wanted was to have him spend as much time as he could with the family. This is something Federer has always prioritized too.

However, apart from that, he also knew he had to take decisions individually. So, he stated, “You can’t always run everything by Mirka … I take decisions in the team, but as a leader, I also have to make decisions myself.” 

This coordination and cooperation between the two let the couple be each other’s biggest supporters. Even when Federer was going through an injury at the beginning of his career, Mirka took care of him. He acknowledges and appreciates the sacrifices that she has made for him. In an interview with SportsPanorama in 2020, he did not shy away from accepting that he would have left tennis if Mirka had asked him to.
