The Wimbledon Championships is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Not only does it get the highest viewership in the world, all players await the chance for glory at the grass Grand Slam. While players play for the glory, the prize money is also something that players look forward to. Even after the All England Lawn Tennis Club lost its ability to award points to the players in 2022, several stars still played for glory and the prize money.

Here is the record-breaking 2023 Wimbledon prize money
Following in the footsteps of the French Open, Wimbledon also has decided to offer a larger prize pool this year. In contrast to the ?40 million total prize money in 2022, players will contend for a share of ?44.7 million in prize money. The total prize money for the single’s winner has increased by more than 11%, according to ESPN,?a drastic leap forward for the grass slam.

While the prize money has steadily increased each year since 1968, this year’s jump has been the largest in its history. The total prize pool fell after the pandemic in 2021: a reduction of 7.85%. But the tournament has finally recovered from its losses.

A breakdown of Wimbledon 2023 prize money
The overall prize pot will be divided amongst players who participate. Following the traditions of tennis, the biggest part of the prize pool will go to the winners of the men’s and women’s singles category. They will take home ?2.35 million along with 1000 points. The runner-ups will win ?1.17 million and the semifinalists will get ?600,000. The prize money will become less for players eliminated in the earlier rounds.

Winners in the doubles division will win ?600,000 and the runner-ups will be awarded ?300,000. In a same pattern as the singles division, duos who exit earlier will receive a smaller cut from the prize pool.

It is all about equal pay at the Wimbledon Championships
The world of sports still has a long way to go to achieve equal pay for men and women. Several WTA stars have spoken out for equal pay for the women’s division in the racket sport, especially in the Masters and WTA 1000 events. However, as far as Wimbledon is concerned, like other Grand Slam events, it is another tournament which offers equal pay to its players. The AELTC announced that the prize money for men’s and women’s category will be the same from 2007. The doubles men’s and women’s prize money was equal from 2007 as well.
