Former American tennis star Andre Agassi was one of the best tennis players of his time. The 52-year-old is an eight-time Grand Slam champion and an Olympic gold medallist. On a personal front, he was in a long-time romantic relationship with former German tennis star Steffi Graf.

The couple went on to tie the knot. They once appeared on the chat show with former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj. Agassi narrated the story of his plans to have a ball dance with Graf. Here’s what happened next.

A wish that didn’t come true for Andre Agassi

Back in those days, there was a tradition of the Wimbledon Championships. The winner of Gentlemen’s singles and Ladies’ single used to have a ball dance. Having a love interest for Graf, Agassi gave his best to win the final while he prayed for Graf to win her final too. But it did not go as he planned.

“The ball was something that I always envisioned to be. You don’t know what it’s really like and I’ve always heard about the dance that you have with the female champion and obviously, Steffi is playing Monica in the finals and I am praying for Steffi to win. And we get to the ball and looking forward to it. I don’t dance at all, but it still to me would have been enjoyable, and it was the first year they canceled it. The Wimbledon canceled it,” he said.

However, a little setback could not stop the destined couple to bond as they finally married in 2001 after dating for two years.

Andre Agassi’s rivalry with Pete Sampras and John McEnroe

A great tennis player himself, Agassi had an interesting rivalry with greats Pete Sampras and John McEnroe. Against Sampras, Agassi played 34 matches in which Sampras did better with 20 wins while Agassi ended up winning 14.

While he played only four matches against McEnroe, both earned two victories each.
