French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open Announce a Decisive Scoring Change to Be Implemented From This Year

Today, 16th March, The Grand Slam Board, comprising of the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open announced a major change in the match format. As per the board announcement, the final sets of all the matches will have a 10-point tie-breaker if the set score reaches 6-6. The decision will come into action from 2022 Roland Garros itself, set to begin from 22nd May.

As per the board, the change is currently in the trial phase. The same will be reviewed at the end of a full Grand Slam year. Further, the board has also stated that the decision has been taken after consulting all the governing bodies and the officiating community of the sport. The ruling comes in place following a powerful urge to make more prominent consistency in the guidelines of the game. Furthermore, the call has also been taken to upgrade the experience for the players and fans the same.

This preliminary, which has been endorsed by the Rules of Tennis Committee represented by the ITF, will apply primarily to all Grand Slams. Furthermore, the rules will be applicable in all the categories like Qualifying, Men’s singles and pairs, Women’s singles and doubles, Wheelchair, and Junior occasions in singles.

Deciding set rules prior to the announcement

Uniformity in the rules of the deciding set has been a long-time issue now. Prior to this announcement, all the four Grand Slams previously had different rulings for the final set. Before the announcement, a large portion of the tennis world supported longer matches. However, on the other hand, a revolutionizing part of the tennis fraternity urged for shorter matches.

Prior to 2019, Australian Open had a difference of two games ruling for the final set. As per the previous rule, the players continued to play the deciding set till the time one of the players takes a two-game lead. However, following the demand for shorter matches, in 2019, the Australian Open revised its deciding set ruling. As per the new rule, a 10-point- tie breaker was introduced at 6-6 in the final set.

French Open has also been receiving heavy criticism for still carrying on the traditional format of advantage set. As per the rules, a player had to take a two-game lead to win the final set.

Wimbledon, which previously had an advantage set rule, revised its ruling in 2018 with the introduction of a tie-breaker. However, unlike the traditional tie-breaker at 6-6-, the tie-breaker in the final set of Wimbledon now had to be played at 12-12.

Unlike the other three, US Open uses the traditional tie-breaker system at 6-6. As per the rule, a 7 point tie-breaker was played at 6-6 in the final set at the US Open.
