Back in September 2003, Andy Roddick was the talk of the American tennis circuit. The young player, who was 21 years old back then, won his maiden Grand Slam tournament in the U.S. Open. Much to everyone’s surprise, he even overshadowed the then-world No. 1 player, Andre Agassi, in the same tournament. 

Agassi initially went down to Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in the semifinals. And then, later on, Roddick defeated Ferrero in the finals to win the men’s singles tennis title. The 52-year-old Agassi was never able to reclaim the number one spot after that. In the same year, there was an instance when Andre Agassi was seen involved in a funny banter. It was during the 2003 US Open – Arthur Ashe Kids Day.

On one of the occasions when Agassi was about to serve, he seemed to hold on for a movement and got involved in a cheeky conversation with both Andy Roddick and Anna Kournikova. Firstly, he looked at the chair umpire, Anna Kournikova who was seen saying, “Alright, common, let’s get serious. This is serious business here. Let’s play. Okay, serious.”

In reply, Andre Agassi said, “If I hit this, I get your cell phone number.” Then Kournikova replied by saying, “Okay, I will turn it off. Sorry.” Right after this, Roddick, the then world No.1, got involved in a fun conversation and said, “Wait, wait. No. Winner of this point. I got to get some out of it.”

Each year at the end of August, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) hosts Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at its headquarters in Flushing Meadows, Queens. The USTA and IBM are the event’s sponsors. This particular event serves as an unofficial kickoff for the US Open, which follows the next day.
