Emotions and thoughts about Rafael Nadal’s absence have been flowing in since he announced his absence from the French Open. Tennis stars, TV pundits, coaches, commentators, journalists, and fans alike have commented on his withdrawal. Sadness, frustration, strangeness, anger, gratitude, and reminiscences are some ways in which people reacted to the disheartening news. Martina Navratilova was among the people who reacted strongly to the withdrawal of the ‘King of Clay’. She, too, spoke about how her legendary eyes see another legend.

Navratilova’s high praise for the Spaniard won’t come as a surprise to anyone after looking at his records, particularly at Stade Roland Garros. Rafael Nadal is the only player in history to turn a particular tennis surface into his very own playground. Because it was up to him to decide who shall win. His records speak about his invincibility, his victories, about his grandeur in the clay courts of Paris.

Navratilova on Rafael Nadal’s dominance

Rafael Nadal announced his withdrawal from his favorite Grand Slam tournament at a press conference earlier this month. After watching the 14-time French Open champion admitting his injury woes, many believe he won’t play again in France. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova too joined the ‘gathering’ of mourners to bid adieu to the ‘King of Clay’ while speaking to Tennis News.

The American tennis legend described the two decade long Spaniard’s dominance as ‘Nadal against the field’. She said, “When somebody has dominated a tournament as much as Rafa has dominated this. For almost two decades, it has been Rafael Nadal against the field.” She further commented upon the attitude of some players who think they can win because there is no Nadal.

Navratilova added that Nadal’s absence is a void that can’t be filled. “It’s a massive, massive hole that nobody can fill,” she added. The ‘King of Clay’ always displayed an unforgiving attitude towards opponents in France. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are predicted by analysts to be winners in Nadal’s absence.

Nadal, Djokovic and a goodbye

Djokovic too shared his views about his long-time rival. Actually, he said about Nadal, what the Portuguese soccer legend Ronaldo always says about his archrival Messi — that they kept pushing each other.

The Serbian star called him as one of the “most impactful people” in his career. In addition to that, he called him “great motivational factor to keep playing“. Someone who kept pushing the boundaries. Furthermore, the tennis star commented on how the news came as a shock to everyone and also how he felt emotional about the same. And that it made him think about his own career.

Djokovic-Nadal rivalry is considered one of the greatest in sporting history. The two legends clashed with each other 59 times, with Djokovic leading the battle by a slight margin. Djokovic won 30 times while Nadal clinched victory 29 times. Djokovic leads the matches played on hard courts. Nadal leads the ones played on clay. On grass, the record is even for the two stars at 2-2.

Even if Martina Navratilova had to remind the people about the unbeatable record of Nadal, Djokovic’s words emphasize it more than anyone else. Do you think Rafa can have a successful 2024 season? Will he retire at next year’s French Open?
