Indeed, Tomljanovic has had a breakthrough 2021 season so far. Chiefly, the 28-year-old Croatian-Australian professional made it into the Wimbledon quarterfinals and US Open third round for the first time in her career. For this, her Italian boyfriend Berrettini credits her mindset.

“I know her, and I think I know how much she’s tough on herself,” Berrettini said. “I’m always telling her that she has to kind of tell herself that she achieved a lot during her career and has to enjoy what she’s doing.”

Power couple Matteo Berrettini and Ajla Tomljanovic talk about pressure

When Tomljanovic was asked, she said what’s been helpful for her is her ability to accept, move on and try again. Although losses could sometimes feel like a burden, she is happy to have the opportunity to play.

“The competitiveness and the losses sometimes get a little heavy,” Tomljanovic said. “Just simplifying it, always moving forward, learning from it, that’s what kind of keeps me going.”
