Back in the day, Dimitrov and Maria Sharapova were the ultimate tennis power couple. The Bulgarian apparently saw Maria perform in 2013 and instantly sent her an email. There was mutual admiration between the two, which was much appreciated by their legions of fans. At the same time, Maria, in her autobiography, admitted that she had doubts about Dimitrov’s dating eligibility.

However, after two years of dating, the couple eventually broke up in 2015. After losing to Serena Williams in the same year, Sharapova went through some of the worst times of her life. The Russian champion player once talked about how her ex-boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov, should propose to her marriage.

In early 2015, Maria Sharapova spoke about how it feels watching her then-boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov, play tennis on the court during one of her interviews. Later she answered the host’s question about the kind of proposal she loves from Dimitrov by saying, “Yeah, I don’t like spectacles at all.” She further echoed her previous statement by saying, “Oh, that’d be horrible. No. That’s never really been my style. I prefer more private intimate occasions.

Talking about their relationship, the Madrid Open 2013 was when the couple made their relationship public. Maria Sharapova, who has won five Grand Slam titles, explained why she and Dimitrov broke up in her 2017 autobiography. She claimed that they were on a different page during their relationship.

At the age of 17, Maria Sharapova stunned the tennis world by defeating Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final, catapulting her to international renown. Besides the 2004 WTA Championships, this was the first time the Russian had ever beaten Serena.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner has dominated this rivalry, winning 20 of their previous meetings. Serena defeated Sharapova 6-1, 6-1 in their most recent encounter, which took place in the first round of the 2019 US Open.

Unfortunately, Sharapova’s shoulder issue kept her out of action for the better part of 2019, and she could only reach the quarterfinals once. Eventually, after her exit from the Australian Open 2020, the former No. 1 decided to call it quits and retire from the game of tennis.
